Help Support Friends of Utah State Parks!

Since 2009, Utah State Parks has experienced a substantial reduction in appropriated funds, with decreases from $12.3 million to $6.8 million in 2012, and now some state legislators want the agency to reduce its budget by another $2.8 million, to $4 million for fiscal year 2013. With such cuts looming, Utah’s premier state parks system could look very different, with real possibilities of park closures, staff layoffs, reduced law enforcement, and a reduction in days/hours open, programs, and services. In 2010, 4.8 million residents and visitors enjoyed Utah’s 43 State Parks, contributing significantly to the vitality of local economies, especially in rural areas of the state. With the possibility of state park closures, these visitors may disappear, negatively impacting businesses and counties dependent upon state parks as tourist destinations.
